Bective Rangers Squad 2006/07 |
Bective Rangers was formed in 1881 and in the 2006/07 season celebrates 125 years of club rugby.
Bective are co-tenants with Old Wesley of the Leinster rugby grounds at Donnybrook - quite a journey from it's early roots when the club started out with a group of past pupils from the long closed Bective School in Meath.
The 125 years of rugby in Bective have been full of friendship and many contributions to rugby in Ireland - starting with a J Waites in 1886 and then two Magee's, Louis and James went on the tour South Africa in 1896 with the Lions.
In these 125 years of it's existence, members of Bective have been involved in the game at administrative level with three Presidents of the IRFU. The current Hon Treasurer and Senior Vice-President of the IRFU, John Lyon and Louis Magee (representing the Leinster Branch) are both members of Bective.
When James Joyce wrote Ulysses the only rugby club he mentioned was Bective. The club was also included in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Finnegan's Wake.
As well as being famous in literature the Bective connection is very international and the most famous example of that was the wonderful Welsh and Lions out-half Cliff Morgan. He played for a few seasons with the club in the 1950's and won 9 of his 29 Welsh caps during that time and still keeps in contact with his friends from those years.
There is a very active under-age section in the club which is very important, as unlike many Dublin clubs there is no feeder school to Bective - the Under 16s toured Italy last April.
The Anniversary year got off to a great start with a tour to Argentina in August and there will be an Anniversary ball in November where it is hoped Members past and present will come together for a night of reminiscing, good food & drink and great memories. |
